This blacksmith shop, built circa 1880, was originally operated by John Hyatt, and was located on the family farm on Stormville Mountain. In 1969 the shop stood in the way of the westbound Stormville rest stop on 1-84 and was due to be demolished. John’s son Paul brought the shop down the mountain where for 45 years. it has stood on the Hyatt’s Garage property. When Hyatt’s Garage was sold in December 2014, Elwin donated the blacksmith shop and its contents to the historical society to be preserved in memory of his grandfather. The building was lifted by crane and transported to its new site. Many of the original tools and
heavy anvil came with the shop so that with a coal fire in the forge our blacksmith is able to heat iron and hammer into useful objects such as hooks, tools, and knives. In 2023, the forge and chimney were rebuilt and the roof replaced.
